I was working on a college assignment about formal letter writing (complaint letters, job applications, official requests, etc.), and honestly it made me wonder — do we still use these formats in real life as much as we’re taught?
Most communication today happens through emails, WhatsApp, or quick messages. Even offices prefer short emails over long structured letters with sender’s address, date, subject line, salutation, and all. But at the same time, I feel knowing the proper format still makes communication look more professional and clear.
Have you ever actually used formal letter writing outside exams or school? Maybe for internships, government offices, or complaints?
Curious to hear your experiences — is it still relevant or just an academic thing now?

Haha honestly? The only time I’ve used a proper formal letter format was when I needed something serious — like a job application or dealing with a government office. And suddenly I was like, “Oh wow… thank you, high school English teacher.” 😅
Day-to-day though? It’s all “Hey, just circling back…” and “Per my last email…” — which is basically corporate for “PLEASE READ.”
So yeah, we don’t walk around writing “Dear Sir/Madam” every day, but when it’s time to sound official and not like you just texted from your couch, that format comes in clutch.
